Running for Hospices of Hope
Tim Gray Fundația HOSPICE Casa Speranței
I am not a runner! However, I have been training to run a half marathon in support of Hospices of Hope.
Hospices of Hope provides access to free hospice care to people in South East Europe. They believe that “Everyone deserves to live and die with dignity and without pain”. Something that we often take for granted in our home country.
This charity was founded by a relative of mine, Graham Perolls. Graham visited Romania in 1989 at a time when there was no hospice care available in Romania. Morphine was illegal. Cancer patients were left to die in pain with no emotional or spiritual support. After witnessing a young man dying in terrible pain Graham decided that he needed to use his hospice experience from the UK to help this situation. In 1991 Hospices of Hope was founded and to date and they have helped more than 40,000 patients and their families.
There is still much work to do! In 2015 just under 8% of terminally ill patients in Romania received some sort of specialist hospice care. Hospice Casa Speranei cared for over a quarter of those patients.
I visited some of their hospices earlier this year and was amazed by the passion, love and determination of their teams. I was especially touched by a visit to their recently opened therapy centre for children with rare or life limiting illnesses on the outskirts of Bucharest.
